i confess. i confess. when not at Mysore, I do handstands for fun. As long as I consider it as just for fun (and not in anyway contributing to or taking away from my real practice), it’s okay, right? (right????)

Great article. At a teacher training I was at, somebody asked Manju why we quit doing handstands between navasana. I believe his reply was that the old shala got too crowded and Gurugi wanted to limit collateral damage. A grassy backyard sounds good if available – David Williams also has recommended a swimming pool for practicing when first trying.

Nice! Thanks so much for the article. I don’t have a teacher here that teaches sequenced Ashtanga beyond Primary, so I have been flowing the instructions in Gregor Maehle’s intermediate book. He has one doing handstand vinyasas between many of the seated asanas. I’ve been having fun practicing them and am learning the art of balancing on my hands
slowly but surely but I certainly need more time to make the vinyasas flow smoothly! Now I’ll probably practice them during backbending (and at the park) instead until I can lift more smoothly and quickly! Thanks again! Xx

Hi Peg, My first time reading your blog, what a great idea to get different teachers perspective. Thanks for accepting my facebook friend request, it’s nice to be connected to my extending Ashtangi family. I’m with you Sarah, I do handstands outside of practice for fun too! Shhhhh!

What a terrific post! Thank you for culling such amazing responses from some truly incredible teachers. I’ve been a fan of your blog for some time now and I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading. I recently started a blog of my own and added a link to you in the sidebar, if that’s okay. :) Check it out if you have the time.
